What is Ritual and Why is it Important?

What is Ritual and Why is it Important?

Ritual is a time out of ordinary time. There are varying types of rituals, large group rituals, long intense rituals and then there are the small, everyday offerings that are also rituals, and these are the most common in this work. When I offer milk on my shrine for the grandmothers, I consider that a ritual. When I walk to the water and make an offering for a person in need, that is a ritual. When I pour water to the Earth, asking for conflict to be cleared and communication to be eased, that is a ritual. Ritual is so common to human experience that most of us don’t even notice how many we participate in within the span of one day. Do you call your children or your parents often and regularly? This too could be seen as a ritual: special time set aside just for them. Do you pray or say affirmations, engage in gratitude thinking? These too are rituals. Do you visit a place regularly to commune with nature? This too could be seen as a ritual.

The Evil Eye Is Not What You Think

The Evil Eye Is Not What You Think

According to Italian folk belief, il malocchio, the evil eye, can afflict anyone at any time, in any place. One can never be too careful. Believed to be a common cause of distress—physical, spiritual and emotional—it often needs addressing. It is believed to be caused primarily by jealousy which in the Strega tradition is seen to be the root of all trouble: jealousy and envy.

Soul Washing to Attend to the Contents of Your Personal, Interior Space

Soul Washing to Attend to the Contents of Your Personal, Interior Space

Soul Washing is a ritual for deep self care. It is a time to check in with the contents of our interior, see what is there that needs tending to and offering it nurturing and care. If we have been especially busy, overworked or just come through a crisis of some sort, Soul Washing is a good thing to do.In this ritual we are washing and refreshing our interior space. It is different than the sweep because the sweep cleans the outside, the skin. Here we are reaching for our internal, private, vulnerable soul space, what lies within, the place only we have access to and that only we know completely, or can know completely.
For this ritual you will need:
A fire (either a fire in a fireplace, wood stove or outdoor fire pit. If you do not have access to these, a candle will do) Milk (any kind you prefer)
Healing charcoal if you have it.
Hyssop essential oil (optional)
One raw egg
A bowl large enough to hold the egg covered with milk

Egg Rituals for Deeper Clearing, Cleaning and Extraction

Egg Rituals for Deeper Clearing, Cleaning and Extraction

In an earlier post we discussed classic “sweeps” to clear ourselves of emotional, physical, mental or spiritual “dirt.”

Sometimes the dirt has become embedded in our physical body, meaning it is more than “skin” deep and requires intervention stronger than a sweep. We must attend to this form of dirt as this can quickly turn into physical illness.

Wedeme inform us that there are membranes around each organ and system in our body. We must tend to these as well. The membranes protect what is inside. If the membrane is compromised, the interiority is at risk, the wholeness of the system becomes in danger.

Often in divination, I see a spot or shadow on someone’s heart, womb, liver or throat chakra. In these cases, an Egg Ritual is prescribed. Egg Rituals are to collect and clear deeper down dirt. Rather than a sweep, these are more extractive rituals.

Tree Work to Support Our Life

Tree Work to Support Our Life

There’s a kind of work that I do and recommend to others that I call Tree Work.

Daily Tree Practice: Sit quietly and visualize yourself as a tree. Visualize your roots going deep into the soil, into the Earth. Visualize yourself grounded and rooted–nourished by the Earth. Visualize your branches as reaching out all around you and to the sky, taking in nutrients, perspectives, beauty, rain, sunlight, sounds, the breeze, the footsteps of birds, animals and children in your branches. Visualize yourself as one with all the rest of the Earth, not separate or apart, but rather a part of.
