The Italian Befana Ritual – January 6th

The Italian Befana Ritual – January 6th

Many people celebrate the Feast of Epiphany each year on January 6th. As I was growing up, my Italian Grandmother never considered Christmas to be over until we arrived at Epiphany which she called “Little Christmas.”

She would give small, traditional gifts on this day. Because she was actively Catholic, she would pray in that tradition. But I remember Italian candies, tangerines and nuts coming out on that day. Candles were lit to the names of little elemental being friends to be remembered.

Catholics see the Epiphany as the day that the Three Magi arrive to the baby Jesus and offer him gifts of frankincense, gold and myrrh. But in Italy, the celebration among the village folk is a celebration to and in honor of La Befana.

Membranes of Hope: A Guide to Attending to the Spiritual Boundaries that Keep Lifesystems Healthy from the Personal to the Cosmic
by Theresa C. Dintino

“I write to figure things out. This was proving to be true once again. The push for us to work with the membranes is because of this: The soul of things are at risk.

All of life is alive and ensouled. And the earth is as well. She has many membranes that surround and protect her interiority, her soul. By tending to and caring for her soul, we support and strengthen her membranes.”

The Mysterious and Elusive Dragons

The Mysterious and Elusive Dragons

In the book Warrior Woman, by Maxine Hong Kingston, I found one of the most compelling descriptions of dragons I have yet come upon in a book. It was an exciting find for me and I wish to share it here.

Dragons are one of the unknowable knowables. If someone tells you they know about dragons, be skeptical, because they are a mystery and must remain that way. The more you think you know them, the less you understand them. It is  like wiping up oil with oil, all you get is more oil.

Egg Rituals for Deeper Clearing, Cleaning and Extraction

Egg Rituals for Deeper Clearing, Cleaning and Extraction

In an earlier post we discussed classic “sweeps” to clear ourselves of emotional, physical, mental or spiritual “dirt.”

Sometimes the dirt has become embedded in our physical body, meaning it is more than “skin” deep and requires intervention stronger than a sweep. We must attend to this form of dirt as this can quickly turn into physical illness.

Wedeme inform us that there are membranes around each organ and system in our body. We must tend to these as well. The membranes protect what is inside. If the membrane is compromised, the interiority is at risk, the wholeness of the system becomes in danger.

Often in divination, I see a spot or shadow on someone’s heart, womb, liver or throat chakra. In these cases, an Egg Ritual is prescribed. Egg Rituals are to collect and clear deeper down dirt. Rather than a sweep, these are more extractive rituals.
