If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, especially in the U.S. where we just “turned our clocks back” then you cannot help but notice that we have entered the time of darkness. Though the shortest day of the year is December 21, November often feels like the darkest month. Time to slow down and welcome the dark. Traditionally this is done by bringing in the light: lighting candles, putting up twinkly lights, but how about sitting with the dark in the dark and letting it greet your own dark? How about acknowledging the dark with dark instead of light?

This week’s mini ritual: Welcome in the Dark with Dark
As it becomes dark early and earlier, take some time to greet the dark by sitting in the dark, Or, go out into the dark evening with no light or candle. It doesn’t have to be for long. Just long enough for the dark to meet your inner dark and say hello. Maybe for 10 minutes? You may want to do this more than once, alone or in a group. Notice what happens when you do that. When you still your self long enough to be with the dark.

Theresa C. Dintino is the author of eight books and serves as a guide and spiritual mentor to many. While attempting to reclaim and restore her ancestral medicine lineage, the Italian Strega tradition, Dintino was surprised to be “claimed” by the West African Dagara tradition of stick divination. Honored by this invitation, Dintino pursued it, and in 2011 was initiated into this potent form of divination. Besides her family and daughter, this turned out to be the greatest gift of her life.
